Frequently Asked Questions

Why MMS?
At the Metrowest Music Studio, we meet each student at their level. There is no single approach to teaching music and everyone learns at their own pace.
Students are invited to complement their private lessons with music theory imparted in both our musicianship classes, available free of charge for our students, as well as the Theory-in-a-Box online program.
At MMS, we also prepare students for an annual recital and a private jury performance at the end of every semester. Here, students, regardless of their playing level, are given the opportunity to perform and receive feedback from other instructors.
Can I sign up any time during the year?
Yes. Our lessons are structured on a monthly basis (with the exception of ensemble classes), allowing you to sign up at any time as long as there is a slot available.
Do I have to audition?
No, we accept students of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds; from the absolute beginner to the advanced.
Do students learn music theory?
Our students, age 10 and above, have access to Theory in a Box, a groundbreaking online program developed by the Bloomingdale School of Music in New York. There is a one time fee of $50 dollars paid with the first month of lessons as a sign up cost. This innovative online program has carefully written lessons, musical examples, high-quality audio and video clips, and interactive learning and testing tools all packaged in a beautiful and easy-to-use online interface.
Is my child too young to learn music?
Although a child is never too young to experience music, he/she could certainly be too young to learn an instrument. The classical, for instance, might be too demanding for students under the age of eight, whereas the piano could be successfully taught as early as six. That said, each child is different and learns in their own rhythm. Please check with us and we will be happy to sign the child up for a trial lesson.
Does the studio accept adult students?
Certainly. There is no age limit and music lessons are available for both children and adults. Parents of children who are younger than 7 are advised to set up a meeting with the teacher before signing up for music lessons.
What guitar should my young child begin with?
The school favors the nylon-string classical guitar to an acoustic (steel strings) guitar for two reasons: nylon strings are easier on the fingertips, minimizing discomfort before the student develops calluses, and the classical guitars have a smaller frame than acoustics, which for a beginner is usually more confortable. Depending on the age, it may also be appropriate for a kid to start with a 3/4 sized guitar.
